The first thing I noticed about the movie Some Days Are Better Than Others, is that no one’s seemed to have heard of it. When I brought the screener disc over to a friend’s house for movie night it was met with, “huh?” and “ohhhh, I think I remember hearing about that” but no one had any idea what the movie was about, and you know what, we kind of still don’t. But that’s okay! Carrie Brownstein is in it and she could star in a two hour movie that’s all about mold removal and it would be my #1 new fave.
The film stars Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney, Portlandia, Wild Flag) and James Mercer (The Shins) and also, apparently, everyone my friends and I have ever known in our entire lives – or at least those who reside within the PNW area. Watching this film was like playing some sort of cultural bingo game where every fives minutes or so someone was shouting out “I filmed my last record in that bedroom!” or “I made out with that girl in a bathroom once!” We also all agreed, hands down, that aside from Brownstein, the female character with the awesome highlights and perfect skin was the most attractive person in the movie. I don’t remember her character’s name – or if it was even mentioned – but if you’re reading this, awesome highlight girl, we want to date you.
A rough outline of the plot of the film is that Carrie Brownstein plays a hot girl who’s sad about her shitty boyfriend, so she makes a hat out of a stuffed animal, and then tries to get on a reality TV show. Sub-plots include James Mercer’s character working odd jobs while hanging out with an old man who makes films about bubbles, and another one (sub-plot) about a depressed lady who works at a thrift store and isn’t allowed to talk through the whole film but just comes home after work each night and stares at a table.
The film is said to have opened theatrically on March 25th.
