She’s Got The Power: A Free Girl Group Extravaganza in NYC!

by Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

So I just found out about this event, She’s Got the Power: A Girl Group Extravaganza at Damrosch Park Bandshell, Lincoln Center and I’m kind of spazzing out because it sounds so amazing. It’s a symposium AND concert featuring some of the most legendary, amazing girl, group singers of the 1960’s. I saw Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes about two years ago and she was just phenomenal. She was so nostalgic and never missed a beat by singing all the hits. It kind of made my life when she singled me out to wave because I was dancing like a maniac. I always thought it was sad that I was such a fangirl for singers I’ll probably never see live, but little did I know someone would create a FREE event like this and I’d have the opportunity to see some of my favorites like Lesley Gore and singers of The Crystals and The Chantels.

Check out some of my favorite girl group songs and information about the event below:

Jill Sternheimer, Associate Producer of Lincoln Center Out of Doors, says “As we’ve been pulling the day together, I’ve spent hours on the phone with these ladies and I’m constantly blown away by their stories.  Not only how everyone’s careers were intertwined, but about their connections to so many of the other architects of rock and roll, from the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix to Joey Ramone and so many more. We’re excited that they will have a chance to share some of this history with Lincoln Center’s audiences, and that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be able to preserve these important cultural oral histories.”

Film Archivist extraordinaire Joe Lauro will be showing rare film clips of the girl groups in action during intermissions, completing the 360-degree look at this unforgettable window in musical time. Archival films are courtesy of Joe Lauro, Historic Films Archive, LLC.
