“She Keeps Me Warm” Singer Mary Lambert Debuts Warm Fuzzy-Inducing Music Video

by Kat Hamilton

Since she first crooned that tear-jerking hook on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s now infamous gay-rights anthem “Same Love,” singer Mary Lambert has gone from working three jobs to recording full-time.

Her latest milestone comes in the form of her first music video, for none other than the single “She Keeps Me Warm.” After watching the clip, I couldn’t help but notice that it left out a few key elements necessary for music videos of today: There were no montages of naked women standing around with animals. No crotch shots in white spandex or fingers oozing Pepto-Bismol. Instead, just two girls experiencing the first butterflies of new love.

Female pop stars have continuously made use of homosexuality as a prop to garner attention in music videos and live performances. Whether or not Britney Spears would actually kiss Madonna in the privacy of her own home is her business, but it’s nice to feel like you are getting to know the real Mary Lambert and not just a human publicity stunt.

Though, the best thing about the “She Keeps Me Warm” video isn’t just the featuring of a lesbian love story (although that is pretty rad!). But what really got me was the fact that it’s a simple, honest story about real people. In a world where singers do their best to create exponentially weirder controversies, Mary is cool with just being Mary.

The “She Keeps Me Warm” video has only been growing in popularity since Lambert’s performance at the VMA’s a few weeks ago. To see such a talented artist getting attention for all the right reasons begs the question: does the world really need the bump and grind? Do we even want it anymore?
