She & Him Will Whisk You Away in “Stay Awhile”

by Mariana Garces

Indie darling duo She & Him is back to cover the Dusty Springfield 1964 classic “Stay Awhile” in the premiere of their new video out on Vevo today. The music video, directed by CANADA, begins with M. Ward picking up his invisible guitar and plugging it into his matching invisible amp. Zoey Deschanel appears in a dreamy blue dress, singing to her ghostly lover as he pulls her off her feet to dance. They spin and twirl around the house, which seems trapped in the 1960s, as Ward plays along.

It’s a melancholy version of the upbeat original song, made even more somber by Deschanel’s hopeless romantic longing and crooning. If that’s not sad enough, the video ends with Deschanel dancing her way into heaven, dipped one final time by her beau onto a bed of clouds, as M. Ward packs up his instrument at the house and leaves.

“Stay Awhile” is off the band’s new album coming out, Classics (out December 2 on Columbia Records), which will feature covers of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Costello, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison and more. Classics was recorded live to emulate the original melodies with a full-bodied sound.

See the band perform the Frank Sinatra hit “Time After Time” (not the Cyndi Lauper version, sorry) live on the Today Show below and look for it on NPR Music’s First Listen next Monday Nov. 24th.
