Sharon Van Etten has stepped out of her comfort zone by experimenting and pushing her musical boundaries with help from her killer band, The Attachment Theory, as proven by the February release of the American singer-songwriter’s seventh studio album—which is also the first for the collaborative group.
In this eponymously named debut album, fans of Van Etten will be pleased to hear her smoky vocals and introspective lyrics are still intact as she flexes her new creative muscles. An electronic, danceable beat kicks off on tracks like “Afterlife,” “Idiot Box,” and the rocking frenzy of “Indio.” Things let loose and get funky on “I Can’t Imagine (Why You Feel This Way)” then turn around on ambient numbers like “Fading Beauty” and “I Want You Here.” Given its positive reception, this album is proof that artistic gambles—and group projects—can really pay off.
