Samantha Bee Trashes Ohio’s New Heartbeat Abortion Law

by Kelly Walters

Donald Trump’s cabinet picks may seem like the worst possible stories in the news, but Ohio’s state legislators are really giving Trump a run for his money. Just weeks after it was announced Texas would require funerals to be held for aborted fetuses, Ohio passed a law making abortion illegal after a heartbeat is detected in a fetus.

On Monday, Samantha Bee fleshed out what is being called the strictest abortion law in the nation; especially given that a heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks into a pregnancy.

“What the hell, Ohio? At six weeks, most women won’t even know they’re pregnant,” Bee said. “Especially now, since every time we wake up and realize Trump is president, we all have morning sickness.”

Republicans having been trying to get this bill passed for years to no avail. But Ohio lawmakers said they were newly motivated in the wake of Trump’s win and the likely appointment of a conservative Supreme Court justice.

During the segment, Bee pointed out that Republicans were successful in getting this, and other restrictive laws passed recently, by presenting a newly developing fetus as a person as opposed to a bunch of cells. Language used in the bill like “unborn human individual” leads to a confusing understanding of what a fetus is, especially only a few weeks into a woman’s pregnancy.

With Texas, and now Ohio, as precedents, more restrictive abortion laws are likely to follow; and potentially even the approval of Trump’s promise to repeal Roe v Wade.

“Overturning Roe has always been the pro-lifers wet dream,” Bee said. “And now, the way things are going, it’s a wet dream that may soon be required by law to have a full and dignified burial.”
