Samantha Bee’s Response To Donald Trump’s Election Proves She’s The Comedian We Need These Next Four Years

by Erika W. Smith

Samantha Bee’s show Full Frontal With Samantha Bee has been on the air for less than a year, but she’s proven herself a much-needed voice in this election season, especially with Jon Stewart gone from the Daily Show, Colbert leaving The Colbert Report behind, and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore canceled. And Bee’s show last night was one of her strongest yet.

In an ironically sparkling jacket, Bee ruthlessly broke down the results, placing appropriate blame on white people for buying into Trump’s racist rhetoric and the media for covering Clinton’s email “scandal” more than Trump’s actual policies.

A few key quotes:

“And please don’t even think about writing something stupid like ‘What a lucky break a Trump presidency is for comedians! The jokes just write themselves!’ No, no, no, shut up. Jokes don’t write themselves. Jews write jokes, and they are scared shitless.”

“Once you dust for fingerprints, it’s pretty clear who ruined America: white people. I guess ruining Brooklyn was just a dry run. The Caucasian nation showed up in droves to vote for Trump, so I don’t want to hear a goddamn word about black voter turnout. How many times do we expect black people to build our country for us? White people, this is the worst thing we’ve ever — no, I’m sorry, that’s a very high bar. And holy shit, don’t try to distance yourself from the bad apples and say ‘it’s not my fault I didn’t vote for him,’ #notallwhitepeople. Shush. If Muslims have to take responsibility for every member of their community, so do we.”

“A majority of white women, faced with the historic choice between the first female president and a vial of weaponized testosterone said, ‘I’ll take option B. I just don’t like her.’ Hope you got your sticker, ladies. Way to lean out.”

“The entire amount of network time devoted to policy in 2016 was barely longer than an episode of Family Guy. Though, to be fair, it felt shorter. Those 32 minutes included no trade, no healthcare, no climate change, no drugs, no poverty, no guns, no infrastructure, and no deficits, but plenty of polls, projections, and scandal. And not even the good Scandal, just the one that should have been canceled years ago.”

And, in a hopeful moment:

“America is still a great country, and it is still worth fighting for. It has Shonda Rhimes shows and peanut butter and Beyoncé and Lin Manuel Miranda rap-weeping at award shows and it has the beautiful U.S. Constitution, which we should probably start teaching in schools.”

Keep it up, Sam Bee. We’re going to need you.
