Riot Grrrl Artist Nikki McClure Has Her First Solo Show

What happens when a Riot Grrrl grows up?

Olympia, Washington-based artist Nikki McClure spent the early ‘90s making album covers for Sleater-Kinney and touring with Lois Maffeo and Kicking Giant.

In 1996, she began to paper-cut: armed with an X-ACTO blade and black paper, McClure creates beautiful, sculptural “carved paintings” of everyday life. Her paper-cuts have been featured on record covers, calendars, greeting cards, non-profit logos, Microsoft advertisements and even storm drains.

Now, McClure is about to have her first solo show, Nikki McClure: Cutting Her Own Path, 1996-2012, at the Belleveue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Washington from Nov.13 to Feb. 3. If you’re there, make sure you go — and if you’re not, check out some of McClure’s amazing paper-cuts on McClure’s website.
