Lemme me tell you about Lemmy…

by Laurie Henzel

Filmmakers Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski made a documentary about heavy metal legend and lead singer of Motorhead, Lemmy Kilmister, and if you are like me and like the heavy stuff, you have to check it out. It’s called Lemmy: 49% Mother F**cker. 51% Son of a B*tch and it’s a candid portrait of a true original. This guy lives an unapologetically hard rock lifestyle, and the film includes some great footage of his earlier bands including the wonderfully psychedelic space rock band, Hawkwind.

It’s also full of interviews with other rock notaries, such as Dave Grohl, all the members of Metallica, Joan Jett, Henry Rollins, Slash and many more who all profess their love and admiration for Lemmy.

Here are some fun facts I learned about the surprisingly lovable godfather of metal.

-Favorite band: The Beatles

-Is a huge WWI and WWII aficionado

-Has an extensive collection of Nazi memorabilia, (but claims he’s not a Nazi since he’s dated black girls. – No mention if he’s ever dated a Jew)

-Has a huge collection of knives

-Is a hoarder

-Wears daisy dukes when it gets hot out (!)

-Loves to gamble

-can often be found at his local hang out the Rainbow in LA

-was Jimi Hendrix’ roadie

The soundtrack is, of course, formidable so it would be good to see this in a theater with a good sound system, and as I lounged on my couch I was mesmerized by Lemmy’s facial moles and briefly fell into a metal trance. Below are the theater dates, check it out!
