Review: Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs: No Help Coming

by Jen Hazen

Just in time for summer, Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs deliver another round of dark Americana music perfect for your next moonshine tasting or impromptu back porch shindig—No Help Coming (Transdreamer). It has been four years, and four albums, since the duo consisting of Ms. Golightly and Lawyer Dave released their gritty 2007 debut, You Can’t Buy A Gun When You’re Crying, and the two don’t show any signs of slowing down.

Originally from the U.K., Holly spent her early years as a Headcoatee under the tutelage of Billy Childish where she helped the group churn out inspired garage rock. Later, she veered off under her own name and released an impressive album per year for roughly 10 or more years.

Rumored to have met during a truck stop bathroom performance of Dunn Brokeoff, she and her new beau Lawyer Dave, have settled into some down-home country folk living and are only just beginning to tickle our fancies with twangy goodness. The title track, “No Help Coming” with its raunchy romp, sounds like it would be played best behind a screen wire as to keep the bottles of cheap beer from striking the band. So, uncork that second barrel of corn whiskey, put down that shotgun, and start stomping those feet. [Peter Wenker]
