We sent our favorite photographer (and Laurie’s main squeeze) Michael Lavine to The Sundance Film Festival to check out the festival and report back to us on what’s good this year.

While deeply entrenched in the insanity known as Sundance, I spend most of my time shuttling from theater to theater, waiting in line, watching movies and then talking to strangers about said movies while waiting in another line or standing uncomfortably close on another shuttle. I’m averaging about 4 movies per day, and fresh in my mind is a movie called For a Good Time, Call… starring Lauren Anne Miller and Ari Graynor. It’s a raunchy and charming story about two girls who start a phone sex business and I would say it’s the BUSTiest movie I’ve seen here yet.

I also really enjoyed Nobody Walks, written and directed by Ry Russo-Young (co-written by Lena Dunham, of Tiny Furniture fame) and starring Olivia Thirlby, John Krasinski and Rosemary DeWitt. It’s about a young woman who comes to stay with a family to get some help completing the soundtrack to her art film, and ends up wreaking havoc on everyone’s emotions. Justin Kirk has a wonderful supporting role as a successful actor seeking psychotherapy. I personally thought it was a very well-executed film and I think Ry is a very talented director.

The film that really took me by surprise and blew me away was the documentary Marina Abromovic: The Artist is Present, which successfully ties together Abromovic’s whole career with an in-depth, insider look at her three month exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. It’s a love story and it’s an inspiration– don’t miss it.
