Release Party For Karen & The Sorrows This Thursday

by Intern Ariana

If you’re looking to have a grand ole time this Thursday, June 28, look no further than the EP release party for Ocean Born Mary- the debut album from alt-country band Karen & the Sorrows. It’ll be in Park Slope, Brooklyn at The Rock Shop (249 4th Ave), where the band will play alongside The Library and Clare Burson.

Ocean Born Mary was inspired by an old New Hampshire ghost story of the same name. During the early 18th century, a pirate vessel hijacked an immigrant ship, which was a common occurrence. The uncommon twist is the birth of a baby girl aboard the ship. The pirate captain decided to spare the lives of everyone when he heard the baby girl cry. Eighteen years later he returned to New Hampshire to marry the young woman, named Mary after his mother. According to the legend, Mary sealed him into the walls of their home that the two now haunt.

Karen Pittelman, a BUST favorite, is accustomed to writing about letting go. But, once she heard band member Elana Redfield’s story of Ocean Born Mary, Pittelman decided to flip the familiar idea on it’s head. The EP is dedicated to to “obsessive possession.” The country twang of Karen & the Sorrows is supported by Pittelman’s rhythmic vocals and Redfield’s poignant guitar work.

The release party is part of The Rock Shops’ American Pie series, which takes place every last Thursday of the month. It features Americana, alt country and bluegrass groups, putting Karen & the Sorrows right in its element. Check out their sound below.
