Ruth Bader Ginsburg, affectionately known as the Notorious R.B.G., has recently taken to publically and openly criticizing Republican Presidential frontrunner, Donald Trump. This type of political commentary from members of the Supreme Court is unheard of and, most would agree, unethical.
In the last week, Ruth Bader Ginsburg has made several comments directly insulting Trump. In an interview with the New York Times the Justice said, “I can’t imagine what this place would be—I can’t imagine what the country would be—with Donald Trump as our president.” Later with CNN, she went on to say, “He says whatever comes into his head at the moment. He really has an ego.” And while these statements are undeniably true, one must wonder why she is saying them.
Ginsburg is the farthest thing from ignorant and knows these types of comments are inappropriate and could potentially have significant damaging effects (like being removed from court cases concerning Trump), so what’s the motive behind these critiques? A recent Slate article theorizes that Ginsburg is willing to risk her judicial legitimacy and shining legacy to warn Americans of the great threat that a Trump presidency poses. She is so terrified of the possibility, she is willing to tarnish her name and stoop as low as Trump in the process. And if that’s the case, can we really blame her?
