I’m gonna hand it to Madge; the ‘Material Girl ‘ is showing how much it’s not about the material things, it’s about helping out those who need it who can’t do it alone. Her charity Raising Malawi is lending a hand to help launch the new book ‘I am Because We Are ‘ by holding an online auction on ebay , to take place on April 2nd. The book launch event at PowerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn will kick-off the online auction, which will remain open to a global audience through April 12th.
The statistics are overwhelming: there are only about 13 million people in Malawi, yet the country is home to over 1 million orphans who have AIDS. The book is meant to raise awareness about the severity of what’s really going on in Africa.
Raising Malawi features images taken by photographer Kristen Ashburn for Madonna’s feature documentary of the same name. All author proceeds from book sales will go to Raising Malawi and The Raising Malawi Academy for Girls. A photo exhibit featuring Ashburn’s work will also be displayed at the PowerHouse Arena throughout April and will be open to the public. — Regina
