There is finally a show to answer the age-old question, “Is there more to life than watering a garden of dicks?” Burlesque star Trixie Little’s Queen of Everything: a Fuckloric Folktale opened last week at Manhattan’s COW Theater.
Queen Of Everything takes place in a magical alpine land in which Trixie Littlewurst is imprisoned by the Cockcoo-Clock that tells her when to water the garden of dicks with her breast milk. One day, an old beggar woman passes by and offers to grant Trixie Littlewurst one wish, so she wishes for her freedom. But as in every good, wholesome fairytale, no wish is granted without a catch. Trixie must venture on a three-day journey through the woods to find the crown and become the Queen of Everything.
The acutely self-aware and absolutely absurd show follows Trixie’s classic heroine’s journey into the dark forest, where she meets traditional mountain people, eats some funky mushrooms and encounters a very horny wolf. It is a surreal — and at times trippy as hell—experience in which folklore meets fucklore to create a burlesque-theater hybrid that definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously.
The mastermind behind the production, Trixie Little, was crowned the Queen of Burlesque in June of 2015, and she knew she wanted to do something big with her year on the throne. She created the show, “applying what I love about burlesque, which is an appreciation for sexuality and just a real honesty about sexuality—it’s just a part of what we do. An interaction with the audience and a real female-empowered sort of work is where I started with it,” Little said, discussing how the show came together.
From there, she gathered a team of outstanding women. “I feel like empowering women and gathering women around me is still very important and very radical in a small way,” she said. The production team is entirely made up of women, and aside from the band members, the cast and crew are all ladies.
Every piece of the production was incredibly well thought-out and excellently executed, from the gorgeous alpine costumes to the phallically decorated set. The psych-mombo quartet Gato Loca’s original score brings the show to life and fits the classically-modern avant-garde show that combines traditional structures with boundary-pushing overt sexuality.
Trixie Little has been in the burlesque business for a long time, starting off as a part of a duo with her husband, known as The Evil Hate Monkey. “We worked together for a really long time and also we’re both performers on our own so we’ve just been taking a few years to develop our own chops and I guess this is like the culmination of that for me,” said Little. This freedom and newfound motivation she found as the Queen of Burlesque gave her the opportunity to not only pursue a dream of putting on a full production, but also to surround herself with supportive female artists. “I would definitely say all the creative women is the best thing about burlesque,” she said.
The sexual freedom and expression in this show—and burlesque in general—is liberating in a way that only a milkmaid showering a garden of paper mache penises of all different shapes, sizes and colors with tit-milk can be. What Trixie Little has created is absurd, hilarious and nothing short of empowering.
