“It Has Taken Me The Better Part of 60 Years to Enjoy the Inside of my Own Head”–92Y Hosts Panel of Women Writers, On Life After 50

If you have the afternoon off tomorrow, or work weird hours like I do, consider dropping by 92Y Tribeca for In the Fullness of Time:  Women Writers on Life After 50.  The downtown cultural center will host a panel of five highly influential female writers, in a discussion of “what it means to grow older as a woman in our world.”  The writers attending made first made noise in the 1970s, introduced new vocabulary, had a hand in the development of the second wave of feminism and kept working through the third, and are speaking up now from a demographic that is often ignored.  Erica Jong, author of Fear of Flying and Ntozake Shange, who wrote the groundbreaking poem-play “for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf” will both be in attendance.  Moderators are Emily Upham and Linda Gravenson, who edited the collection In the Fullness of Time: 32 Women on Life After 50.  Also participating are playwright Tina Howe, author Carolyn See, and author Abigail Thomas, who recently wrote the essay “Sex and the 66-Year-Old-Girl:

“Nana appreciates that the advantage of getting old is not wanting to mess around anymore…When she watches a movie, Nana doesn’t want to cry or be moved or enlightened, and she doesn’t want to be turned on… She saw the one about Woodstock, and it took her almost two years to get over Viggo Mortensen.”
