Why Walk-a-thon when you can Punch-a-thon! For the past 35 years, the Center for Anti-Violence Education has been holding annual Punch-a-Thons to raise awareness and funds for violence prevention and self-defense education for survivors of violence and at-risk youth. It’s kind of like your average charity event, except it’s a bunch of kick-ass women and girls practicing self-defense moves and shouting words of encouragment.
CAE is a Brooklyn-based organization that offers free and low-cost empowerment and self-defense education to women, LGBT people, teen women, children, and other communities especially affected by violence. Considering that one in ten women are physically abused, the need for a place like CAE is great. This year’s Punch-a-thon is this Saturday, June 6th at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY. Visit their website to donate towards the punch-a-thon or to sign up to become a puncher!
