Words of Choice, a pro-choice theatrical performance created by Cindy Cooper, will be in NYC this weekend as part of the first ever WiredArts Fest. The production, composed of a dozen individual stories about reproductive rights, is being performed this time around in honor of Women’s History Month and the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. For those of you outside the New York area, never fear! You will be able to watch the performance from anywhere online. And the best part? Streaming is totally free.
The performance draws from many forms of expression, from spoken word, to poetry, to journalism. Words of Choice is as much an exercise in activism as it is a theatrical performance. Viewers streaming the show online are encouraged to comment and tweet about their impressions and experiences. There will also be panels after the performances, focused on the state of reproductive and rights and social justice.
“Women’s rights and reproductive freedoms are still under attack. As activists and ambassadors of change, everyone involved with Words of Choice is committed to moving public sentiment and influencing policy makers. We created this event because the use of theater is a way to transmit the pro-choice message, opening hearts and minds, and empowering the movement for women’s full equality and rights,” said Cindy Cooper, creator of Words of Choice.
The show is playing at The Secret Theatre in Long Island City on March 1st at 7 pm EST and March 2nd at 3 pm EST. In-studio tickets are $18, and discounts are available for groups and pro-choice activists. You can also stream the performance for free, or pay $2.50 to watch online without commercials.
