Princess Nokia Masters Witchcraft And Tomboy Cool In Her Two Latest Music Videos

Princess Nokia is unstoppable. As she continues her tour around the country, the New York City rapper recently surprised fans with two new music videos from her latest album 1992: witchy girl-anthem “Brujas” and gamer girl inspired “Kitana.” Nokia co-directed and created the concept behind “Brujas.” The video is heavily influenced by Yoruba religion — including clips modeled after Yemaya, the female water spirit who represents the mother of all things. Nokia co-directed and created the concept behind “Brujas.” The video is heavily influenced by Yoruba religion — including clips modeled after Yemaya, the female water spirit who represents the mother of all things. With her gang of witches, they cast spells and perform rituals in a lush, green forest. In another clip, Nokia and her brown girl coven flip off the camera with school girl costumes undoubtedly inspired by 90’s cult classic, The Craft. Nokia’s badass, beautifully composed visuals are an ode to her African roots and the magic of female empowerment.

Destiny has been a huge video game fan ever since she was little and 90’s gaming culture has been a reoccurring theme in her music before. “Kitana,” whose title is inspired by the Mortal Kombat character, opens with Nokia throwing punches in the middle of a basketball court. Frasqueri channels her inner tomboy, sporting cornrows and grinning through a bloody nose. She’s cocky and fierce as she spits her verses in baggy basketball shorts, her friends lined up behind her like a bad girl army. She and her friends laugh and bike around the Bronx streets. It’s a celebration of her Bronx community. In the end, Nokia reminds everyone who’s watching not to mess with her and her squad.
