Podcast of the Week: Throwing Shade

by Mariana Garces

Throwing Shade is the kind of podcast you would make with your best friend. Just like how Broad City portrays Abbi and Ilana’s friendship so perfectly that you feel like you and your friend ARE Abbi and Ilana, Throwing Shade is like you and your friend but even wittier, and with microphones. Self-described “feminasty” Erin Gibson and “homosensual” Bryan Safi met at UCB LA but really clicked when they were both writing for Current TV, where Erin hosted “Modern Lady” and where I first watched Bryan Safi hosting “That’s Gay.” I am so glad they met and that their friendship has blossomed into a beautiful podcast. The first time I listened to Throwing Shade was on a long car trip to visit my friend in NYC and I was laughing so hard I thought it was too dangerous to be driving at the same time.

Erin and Bryan get together to discuss politics, sex, gender, LGBTQ issues, current events and pop culture news, as well as the things friends normally discuss- like what (or who) they did over the weekend. There is a good reason the two have been touring the country for the past year with their live show- and that’s because Throwing Shade is so funny it’s gained a sizable cult following.

You can listen for free and subscribe on iTunes, and luckily Funny or Die also posts a 15 minute clip from the podcast every Thursday on its website (in case you like the hilarious visuals, highly recommended). This week’s episode covered the news of a homophobic New York pastor who claims that Starbucks is “ground zero for Ebola” (simply for making an LGBT friendly commercial), one college’s anti-rape seminar gone horribly wrong, Erin’s new app to track her hormonal cycle and much more.

Sometimes, Throwing Shade even has musical guests to interview, play a few acoustic songs, and play the game “Shade or No Shade.” Musical guests have included Kimbra, Betty Who, even Jack Antonoff of Bleachers. Get a peek of it below and subscribe if you like what you see!
