The NSFW video for the aptly-named title track from gender-bending electro-prodigy Peaches’ latest album, Rub, premiered yesterday, making the rest of us feel like sheltered prudes.
A sexually-charged mesh of electroclash and electro-hop, Peaches has been challenging conventional views of women in music since the ’90s, satirizing hypermasculinity and turning the male gaze on its head. Her latest video does not disappoint. The 5-minute visual accompaniment to the masturbatory lyrics of “Rub” reveals a dystopian lesbian orgy in the desert, where no isolated snapshot does not display a vagina or clitoris in some form. Most notably, the video does indeed feature a reversal of the traditional bukkake scenario, as described in the song, where women circle jerk on a single butch. Ending with communal public urination and a “chick’s dick” being playfully slapped against Peaches’ face, the video for “Rub” is a fun, light-hearted addition to Peaches’ videography.
By using Peaches’ patented brand of shock and spectacle, the video will hopefully continue a dialogue on how the normalized male-gazed bravado within pop and hip-hop affects our views of women and expectations of men.
