So this is pretty awesome: Illustrator Yehuon Chung has depicted a few of our favorite Orange is the New Black characters as their corresponding Disney women through realistic portraits.
According to Chung, “My main goal was to seamlessly combine the two characters while not having one overshadow the other. I tried to maintain the sharp and edgy tone from Orange is the New Black, while accentuating the Disney characteristics with vibrant colors.” Chung’s amazing illustrations capture unexpected parallels between the stories of the inmates and Disney stars.
Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling)
as Alice from Alice In Wonderland
Just like Alice, Piper accidentally wanders into a entirely new world and has no idea what to expect. Unlike Alice, though, Piper slowly learns the system and even more slowly, realizes it’s not all about her.
Alex Vause (Laura Prepon)
as The White Rabbit from Alice In Wonderland
Alex is one of Piper’s first contact within the prison world. She is, after all, the one who named Piper in her testimony. Like the White Rabbit would, Alex brings Piper deeper into the world and guides her through it, for better or for worse. Can I just say it’s insane that Alex still looks so hot as a RABBIT!?
Nicky Nichols (Natasha Lyonne)
as Merida from Brave
Like Merida, Nicky was born into an affluent family yet hardly fit into her “ladylike” role. She’s always one to drop quotable tidbits of wisdom and the one you want on your side.
Galina “Red” Reznikov (Kate Mulgrew)
as Tiana from Princess & The Frog
Red, the former kitchen head, is one of the most resourceful characters in the show. And, her backstory is so much like Tiana’s that it’s unbelievable. Worked in a restaurant with big dreams? Check. Had to befriend people, mainly beautiful women who don’t understand her? Check. Doesn’t actually need her frog to live her life? Check. And let’s face it, Dmitri’s definitely a frog.
Gloria Mendoza (Selenis Leyva)
as Megara in Hercules
Megara, the female heroine of Hercules, is super fierce—with the ability to handle herself just fine, thank you very much. If Megara ended up in Litchfield, she would be a total Gloria. Her one downfall? Being so loyal to her boyfriend that she gives up her soul—sounds a bit like Gloria’s problems with her violent husband, Arturo.
Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett (Taryn Manning)
as Prince John from Robin Hood
Pennsatucky hasn’t been the most inspiring character on the show, partially because her beliefs and attempts to forcefully spread them are fairly misguided (although my opinion of her is changing a tad as I get further into season three). Devout and intolerant, Doggett is a caricature of a low-class drug addict, while Prince John is a caricature of a clueless, greedy leader. Sure, there’s a difference socially, but their misguided attempts to succeed are one and the same.
Sophia Burset (Laverne Cox)
as Elsa from Frozen
Sophia’s story — a former firefighter who stole credit cards to help finance her transition — is, at heart, a story about a woman struggling to be who she really is, regardless of the prejudices thrown her way. The struggles of both Sophia and Elsa’s storylines are parallel. And let’s face it, Sophia would totally rock Elsa’s ice queen gown.
