Old’s Cool!

by Laurie Henzel

Ladies of a certain age seem to be having their moment in the media right now. Last night, I watched a few episodes of Sunset Daze, the new reality show on WE about feisty folks living in a retirement home in Arizona, whose ages range from their 60s to their 70s. The nouveau riche Real Housewives, who are in their 40s and 50s, are acting up every week on Bravo, and soon we’ll have another Sex and the City movie featuring glam gals in their 40s and 50s. On the Web, we’ve got Advanced Style, an inspiring fashion blog about stylish elders aged 60 and up, and Betty White (88) will be hosting SNL this weekend!

I’ve always enjoyed the elderly—you can learn a lot more from an 80 year old than an 18 year old. And it’s refreshing to see some wrinkles once in a while! While it’s hard to imagine oneself actually being 70 or 80, it is (hopefully) inevitable, so why not have some fun with it? And on Sunset Daze, they party, drink, shoot guns, jump out of planes, get laid, and make it all seem awesome! (My favorite is Gail, pictured above, who has a flaming red head of Marlo Thomas hair. She’s so great!) I only hope I can do fun stuff when I’m that age. But in the mean time, it’s nice to have some TV shows, movies, and Web sites that celebrate age, not ignore it.
