NYC Pride Week and The 16th Annual Del Close Marathon Collide!

by Claire Filipek

If you are still looking for something to do TONIGHT, be sure to check out the UNCIVIL UNION: A benefit concert for The Ally Coalition, New Alternatives, and Broadway Impact featuring Broad City, W. Kamau Bell , Nikki Glaser, Michael Che , Eliot Glazer, Carrie Keagan, Jillette Johnson, Mates of State, Wakey!Wakey!, Cameron Esposito , DJ $mall Change, and surprise guests to be announced! The show starts at 8 pm and tickets are still on sale for $35.

Making it’s PRIDE week debut, the show promises “stand-up comedy, music, celebrity guests and surprises, including opportunities on-site for fans to engage in this important cause.” If tonight is too last minute for you don’t fret! You have more chances to see some of these amazing performers at the Del Close Marathon. Broad City I’m pining for you!

The Upright Citizens Brigades’ Del Close Marathon honors the comedy legend and acclaimed father of modern improv who passed away in 1999. In Close’s memory, UCB has created a non-stop weekend of improv, and following suite this year’s 16th annual DCM starts this friday (6/27) and goes until Sunday night. And because it is non- stop that means shows are going on at all hours— I should know because I was assigned a volunteer slot between 11:30 pm and 6 in the morning.

According to the DCM press release there are many talented performers to look forward to this year: Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts, Matt Besser, and performers Sasheer Zamata (SNL), Bobby Moynihan (SNL), Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Rec), Ellie Kemper (The Office), Nick Kroll (Comedy Central’s Kroll Show), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley, The Office), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Nicole Byer (Girl Code), Shalyah Evans (Girl Code), Jon Gabrus (Guy Code), John Gemberling (Broad City), Chris Gethard (Broad City, The Chris Gethard Show), Betsy Sodaro and many more!

UCB co-founders Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh, and Matt Besser will kick off the marathon on friday. Just to give an idea of scope, the DCM features over 570 improv shows on eight different stages with improv teams from New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, Austin, Philadelphia, England, Canada, Japan, Finland, Puerto Rico.

On the red carpet promoting her new movie, They Came Together, Amy Poehler promised “weird drunken visits” from some celebs at the Del Close Marathon. “I do some stuff and we have guests from all over come back and visit, so it’s like a huge festival,” Poehler told us at the premiere of her movie “They Came Together” at BAM Harvey Theater Monday night. There are “lots of big names, but there’s always some kind of weird visit from some boldfaced name at some point … I guarantee,” she said.

Wristbands for the marathon are being sold for $30 but the wristband will only get you to the standby line for certain shows, so if you really want to see Amy Poehler or Broad City up close and personal I would recommend buying individual tickets.
