NYC Ladies, Your Chance to Become a Roller Derby All-Star Is Here

by Intern Scarlet

Have you ever wanted to try your hand (er, feet) at roller derby? Well now, thanks to Gotham Girls Roller Derby, whether you’re an avid player who wants to get more practice or someone who’s seen “Whip It” once, you can get some skating in. Or you know, just learn to skate, period.

Gotham Girls are the badass women behind the NYC-based roller derby circuit, and their Gotham Girls Roller Derby (GGRD) league is comprised of four home teams (the Bronx Gridlock, the Brooklyn Bombshells, Manhattan Mayhem, and the Queens of Pain) who compete primarily against each other. GGRD also hosts the Gotham Girls All-Stars, whose core members come from the various home teams, and play nationally in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTD) inter-league competitions that count towards WFTDA national rankings.

Though the Gotham Girls have been together since 2003, they’ve only offered this recreational team for the last year and half. The rec league is open to all skaters, regardless of derby experience, and is divided into three different levels. Level 1 is primarily for beginning skaters and people recovering from injuries. Level 2 is for skaters who have solid roller-derby techniques, and would like to learn the rules of the game. Level 3 is for experienced players who are looking for a place to scrimmage.

Sessions on the recreational league last 6 weeks, and the team generally meets every Saturday for two-hour practices. Spaces for the next session are open NOW. Reserving a spot on the recreational team costs $150, and space is limited. But as someone who has completed at Level 1, lemme tell you that it’s worth every penny– it’s the most fun you’ll ever have while exercising. In the words of GGRD Coach Ariel Assault, “As roller derby grows, there need to be more outlets for people to participate in a way that might not require the time commitment or skill level that joining a regular league does.” You heard the woman. So get skating! You can learn more about the Recreational league here.
