Not To Fear, Less Boozy Drink Menu “For Ladies” to Save Women From Getting “Too Drunk”

by amanda

Are you a lady? Do you love to go out drinking, but hate always ending your nights passed out on the bar table with vomit in your hair, since you’re just too darned stupid to regulate your own alcohol consumption? (Don’t worry no one blames you, you’re just a woman, you don’t know any better!) Do you wish that there was some way for you to walk out of the bar at a reasonable hour, with your dignity intact and your dress unscathed, without having to actually drink less? Well not to fear, Los Pollitos III, located on Myrtle Ave in Brooklyn, has an answer to your prayers! With their new drinks “for ladies” that contain less alcohol, now you can occupy that pretty little brain of yours with actual important matters, like groceries and pleasing your man.

I’ve always resented the whole “drink typing” thing, that implies that women drink the fruity “feminine” drinks while the men drink the “masculine” harder liquor drinks. While this gender-typing menu totally caters to this abominable notion- it may have some merit…? Some studies show that that men (obviously according to their size) can handle more alcohol than women, because (so science says) women tend to absorb more alcohol and take longer to break it down. So, when drinking equal amounts, women have higher alcohol levels in their blood than men, and the immediate effects happen quicker and last longer.  So is it not all that bad? On the upside, “lady drinks” are easier on the pocketbook- costing $7 while the “men’s drinks” cost $10. But then, what is that assuming?

Initially, I was very conflicted about whether to be outraged by the “his/her” cocktails, or brush it off as a silly joke that hadn’t set out to make some sort of sexist commentary on women -“The idea was to make people laugh,” claims the manager Marcos Merino, “People get excited about the menu and have fun with it.” And its not like the restaurant forces women to drink the ladies cocktails, “Anyone can order anything,” insists Leo Vasquez, one of the bartenders at the restaurant. But despite the good intentions, the reality is that the menu still reinforces antiquated gender types that imply women are weaker and that force men into the “man box.” (Honestly, I think that this particular situation sucks more for the men because come on, those fruity drinks are delicious.)

Regular Los Pollitos III customer, Leo Jackson, particularly infuriated me with his outrageously sexist comment regarding the his/her cocktails, helping me to push my wavering opinion about the menu in one resolved direction, “It makes sense,” Jackson starts, “It’s women who get so inebriated that they pass out and stumble around. It’s safer for them to have drinks with less alcohol.”  So in sum, thank you Los Pollitos III, for finally being the first restaurant to do the responsible thing, and take the necessary precautions to protect reckless, irresponsible women from drinking themselves to death- because clearly we just can’t help ourselves!
