New Travel Blog: “The Southerly”

by Intern Jessica Butler

If you’re into fashion blogs, you may be familiar with Rhiannon Leifheit of the wonderful, vintage-inspired “Liebemarlene.” Blogging for years, she’s been featured on multiple websites and graced the pages of many magazines, including our very own back in 2008. Liebemarlene is one of the first fashion blogs I’ve read, and I’ve been a follower ever since. While she does post wonderful collections, outfits, and photo shoots, Leifheit also writes about a variety of other things aside from fashion. From silent movie stars to recipes, her blog posts are genuine, intelligent, and injected with personality. Having admitted to loving history just as much as she loves fashion, Leifheit has also written extensively on historic sites, especially ones near her current home of Georgia.

Recently, Leifheit has teamed up with her artist-husband Drew Tyndell to create “The Southerly,” a beautifully designed blog devoted entirely to this very passion. Tyndell, creative director at design/animation studio Awesome Inc. by day and painter by night, takes all of the photos, while Leifheit writes. The site will serve as a travel blog and scrapbook of sorts for the couple as they visit and review different locations in the South, both old and new. Posts so far include an interesting and historic look at a valley tucked away in the Smoky Mountains, an all-encompassing guide to some Savannah favorites (including Victorian graveyards, bakeries, museums, and antique stores), and an informative tour of the Camden Revolutionary War Site in South Carolina. The duo also promises plenty of the silly and slightly offbeat, including weird roadside attractions and tourist traps abound. The site also features a helpful guide link that takes you straight to a specific post, organized by state. You better pack your bags, now; I have a feeling you’ll be itching to take a visit down South after reading this great new blog.
