Nana Grizol Will Make You Feel Possessive

by Kelly McClure

I would say that I listen to about 30+ different bands on any given week, and to be quite frank, most of them sort of bleed right into the next. I like to sit at my desk and listen to each new CD that comes into the BUST office with care, in its entirety, and then at the end I will make my evaluation by taping a little note to the cover that says something like, “this sounds like farts,” or, “this is decent, but in an annoying way.” When pressed to define what sort of music I prefer, I’m never really sure how to answer. All I know is that I like bands that are AMAZING, and Nana Grizol is an AMAZING band.

Nana Grizol is from Athens, Georgia and is fronted by Theo Hilton. Theo has a musical delivery that reminds me a great deal of Daniel Johnston in that he can sing-ramble about almost anything and it will come across like some beautiful punk secret that is just being shared between the two of you during an afternoon in the park. To add about 100 more cool points to the equation, his backing band consists of Laura Carter and Robbie Cucchiaro who are both former members of Neutral Milk Hotel. The band is releasing their second album, Ruth, on Orange Twin and since discovering it, I have not been able to shut up about it. Each of the songs on Ruth lend something to the album as a whole, and are so clever in their folky-punk composition that actual sonic joy is produced. For example: about a week ago I was coming home from a party and was listening to their song “From Here” on repeat. It was insanely cold outside and I had just spent every last cent in my pocket, but the song got me so psyched on life that by the 3rd rotation I was throwing an arm up in the air and trying to bat at tree leaves like some kind of idiot. Or like Judd Nelson’s character at the end of The Breakfast Club. Now isn’t that worth $12?
