Director David Foenkinos’ debut feature (based on his same-titled novel) stars Audrey Tatou as the ethereal Nathalie, who throws herself into her work after the death of her husband. Nathalie has no semblance of a personal life, as she prefers to live by formal interaction and is repelled by the advances of her arrogant boss.
There is a shift in the film, however, which eradicates the narrative’s predictability–the introduction of Markus (Francois Damiens), Nathalie’s awkward and homely Swedish coworker. After Nathalie kisses Markus in a moment of delusion, the two begin a clumsy courtship that stirs friends and coworkers into a frenzy.
While Delicacy shows promise in the script–it’s clear that Foenkinos is also a novelist–and its artful editing, it’s hard to decipher whether Nathalie’s deliverance lies in Markus’ character alone. Regardless, it’s nearly impossible not to fall in love with him for his dry wit and honesty, and his poetically delivered last line could serve as sole justification for watching the film.
