More like Gag Gag

by Emma Claire Goodman

The depth of my love for the brilliantly outrageous Lady Gaga is unlimited, immeasurable, and difficult to articulate. I love how she seeks to express herself, combining her musical talents with fashion, theater, and Dadaism to create something interesting and new. Her songs are actually very well written, with their use of clever wordplay (because who doesn’t remember “bluffin’ with my muffin?”), combining glamour and decadence, and yet still be truthful, poignant, honest, and human with ballads such as Speechless and Wonderful. You listen to Gaga and can’t help but concoct little imaginary stage plays in your head.

And I love that Gaga isn’t afraid to take risks and be different.

When I learned about the rumors of what Lady Gaga requested developers of her new fragrance to recreate, my first response was to go, “EW!” Then I laughed. Then I sat in my chair here at BUST for a long moment, and then I said, “What?” And then I said, again, “EW.”

Purportedly, Lady Gaga is commissioning the fragrance industry to make a perfume that smells of “blood and semen.”

I am really not sure how the scent of blood could be recreated, or why anyone would want to douse themselves in semen and wear it out to the Opera. But maybe its just because I’m a sucker for sweeter perfumes, like Anna Sui’s Live Your Dream, or Betsey Johnson’s signature fragrance. So, hey, to each their own.

It isn’t altogether shocking, considering how heavily bloodiness has played a part in Gaga’s on-stage performances, a la the infamous 2009 MTV Music Video Awards show (which I loved) and the recently controversial Monster Ball Tour. Still, though, I was personally hoping for something a little more…palatable.

Maybe it will come in a really pretty bottle?
