Missed SlutWalk NYC 2011? Watch filmmaker Therese Shechter’s Inspring Footage

by Casey Krosser

The number one reason I wish I lived in NYC, from this past weekend, was SlutWalk NYC!  I really wish I could have made it.  I even had a poster I wanted to make, inspired by (stolen from) another sign I’d seen online: “When a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face YOU TREAT HER WITH RESPECT!”  I love that these SlutWalks have been growing as a movement and happening all across the US, and even around the globe.  It’s truly inspiring just to see the images of the women and men who’ve gathered for protests against rape culture and sexual assault.  Of course, it would have been even more inspiring to be there.

Thankfully, filmmaker Therese Schechter captured some awesome footage of this event.  Schechter has directed several feminist films through her Trixie Films company.  One is called I Was A Teenage Feminist and it talks about the myth that the feminist movement has died.  Her new film is still being developed and it’s called, How to Lose Your Virginity.

My favorite part of Schechter’s footage is the lady who dressed up like Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter.  Literary sluts are the best.  Check out the footage at the link below!
