Mike Huckabee Equates Planned Parenthood With ‘Domestic Terrorism’

by Olivia Harrison

Today in the BUST office, we were pleasantly surprised when we came across the news that Governor Mike Huckabee told CNN Friday that the Planned Parenthood shooting was an act of “domestic terrorism.” But then we dug deeper and were unsurprisingly completely repulsed by what he said next.

Huckabee told CNN, “There’s no excuse for killing other people whether it’s happening inside the Planned Parent (incorrect title but whatevs, bro) headquarters, inside their clinics, where many millions of babies die, or whether its people attacking Planned Parenthood. We ought to value life, every life.”

When asked his opinion on Planned Parenthood’s comments that were essentially blaming the rhetoric that popped up after those notorious videos were released, Huckabee said, “I don’t know of any pro-life leader, any – if you can tell me one, please correct me – but I don’t know of anybody who has suggested violence toward Planned Parenthood personnel or some act of violence toward their clinics. I have not heard that, not from one single pro-life person. I have heard universal condemnation, whether it’s from the Centers for Medical Progress that put out the videos, whether it’s from pro-life advocates – and I consider myself one of them – I know of nobody who has ever suggested that Planned Parenthood be the target of some type of violent attack. So, I think that’s a little bit disingenuous on the part of Planned Parenthood to blame people who have a strong philosophical disagreement with the dismembering of human babies and with the selling of body parts to say that we would like to retaliate by sending some madman into a clinic to kill people.”

Well that’s all fine and good, Mr. Huckabee, but at the end of the day, you’re essentially equating this horrendous act with what goes on inside Planned Parenthood, which is very much a disservice to the people involved. Suggesting that they are in the same category of atrocities is just one more way that right-wing extremists demonize abortion and even more specifically, Planned Parenthood, a place where many women go for healthcare services – not just abortions. The Planned Parenthood shooting was, as Governor Huckabee said, “abominable.” We just wish he had shut his mouth after that. Conservatives, haven’t you done enough?
