Mermaid Marching Lessons-NYC

by Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is coming up Saturday, June 18th (rain or shine!) and there is sure to be tons of colorful characters and mermaids of all kinds. Dressing up is the best part of the parade, but getting started can be daunting. Either shy or just in need of a hand, fear not mermaids, help is to be had! Spend an hour (6:00-7:00pm) with Ayun Halliday, author of the Zinester’s Guide to NYC, May 18th at Old School (233 Mott St.) in preparation and you will be ready to shake your glittery fin in no time at all.

Topics addressed include many things such as: overcoming shyness, determining your theme, pulling together a great low budget costume, determining good crew members, visual cohesion, how to join an existing group, registration, transportation, parade day survival kits, photographers, judges, cultivating a winning mer-sonality, staying on the right side of the law, bathroom strategies, meeting up with friends when nobody’s got cell reception, and reliving the glory in cyberspace (or making the paparazzi work for you!).
