#RiRi4President, Rihanna Just Donated $5 Million To Coronavirus Relief

by Aliza Pelto

Our president might not realize the severity of what is going on in our country and the world at large. But thankfully, our queen and savior Rihanna does. Last week, Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley announced that the pop star, who originally hails from the Caribbean island, is donating $700,000 worth of ventilators to their hospitals. Now, the singer has announced that her organization, The Clara Lionel Foundation, will donate $5 million to Covid-19 relief worldwide.

Via her Instagram, Rihanna revealed that the $5 million would be split between a number of organizations whose aid will be crucial in fighting both the pandemic itself and it’s impact on at-risk individuals. The organizations include Partners in Health, Feeding America, International Rescue Committee and the World Health Organization. On top of donating to these bigger foundations, CLF is working to provide testing and healthcare in countries like Haiti and Malawi, focusing support towards Native communities. “We know that one of the most powerful weapons we have against COVID-19 is preparedness,” they said. “Protecting our frontline health workers and marginalized communities around the world requires getting ahead of it FAST. The time to act is now.”

Rihanna is one of the first celebrities to publically make such a bold and impactful move to aid in coronavirus relief. Alongside the ventilators Rihanna helped attain for Barbados hospitals, CLF’s contributions will provide food to food banks that primarily provide support for elderly folks and other at-risk communities here in the United States, as well as protective gear for medical professionals and lab workers and establish and sustain ICUs in various areas around the world.

The organization, which Rihanna started in honor of her grandparents, primarily focuses on health and disaster preparedness in the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. Providing aid in these areas, as well as right here in the U.S., will be absolutely crucial moving forward in this pandemic. As CLF stated on Instagram, “When we first began this year, never could we have imagined how COVID-19 would so dramatically alter our lives. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, this pandemic will affect us all. And for the world’s most vulnerable, the worst may be yet to come.”
