Meet Your Maker: 5 Questions for Jennifer Taylor-Miller of FattyCakesNY

by Brenda Pitt

FattyCakesNY is truly a New York gem if we ever saw one! Founder Jennifer Taylor-Miller started experimenting with baking back in 2009, when she worked in children’s media. Before she knew it, her co-workers were begging her for bites of her insanely delicious baked goods, which often included unexpected ingredients like candy or popcorn! Four years later, FattyCakesNY is the city’s go-to for unique and sweet experiences. We could not be more thrilled to feature FattyCakes as one of our vendors at this December’s BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular & Food Fair!

Tell us about yourself!

Jennifer Taylor-Miller, Owner, FattyCakesNY.  We make ridiculous cookies and cookie cakes, plus design kick-ass custom dessert tables for events.

How did you get started?

I got started about 4 years ago, just baking for friends and family.  I was fixated on cookies for whatever reason, and had to keep out-doing myself with odd concoctions.  When I came up with the Movie Theater cookie, with popcorn, Swedish Fish & chocolate chips, I figured I was on to something with the ridiculous cookie concept.

What’s inspiring you right now?

The holidays are always pretty inspiring.  There are ingredients that are unique to this time of year, and it’s always fun figuring out new ways to work things like peppermint, cranberries, or eggnog into a cookie.

Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?

Just go with your gut.  If you feel better for having put a few hours a day into perfecting your craft, then do it!

What are you most looking forward to at the BUST Magazine Craftacular and Food Fair this year?

I’ll be on the lookout for really cute gifts for my little boy, who is turning 1 that week.  I might also cuddle a puppy.
