Tell us about yourself!

As seen on MTV: New York Couture is a harmonious blend of punk-rock cool, ultra-glam and prima ballerina limited edition and one-of-a-kind clothing that bring out the rock-goddess and fairy princess in every wear.

“Visualize a geisha wearing a ballerina’s tulle skirt, donning an acid-washed fluorescent top and balancing on a shoulder an old-school boombox blaring Madonna’s Like a Virgin. It’s a euphonious rush of an ‘80s childish cartoon nostalgia, the bliss of ringing ears after an underground show and a dash of girlish pixie dust. Take all the ingredients, blend, shake (never stirred) and you’ve created New York Couture.  ” (as described by writer Aggie Ng).

How did you get started?

New York Couture was an unplanned pregnancy…lol.  I was working for a designer…not doing design…and started making my own clothes because I couldn’t find anything original in stores to wear.  Stylists, press, ect would come into the showroom and would LOVE whatever I had on!  Then a store wanted to carry my pieces…and another…and it was a hurricane after that.  I’m happy I had my baby…ahaha.

What’s inspiring you right now?

Everything inspires me!  My head is like a boiling pot of water with things just popping out.  I have A.D.D….so my mind is always thinking and dreaming all sorts of craziness!  One night it could be a dinosaur chasing me at Burger King…which is weird because I don’t eat at Burger King…lol.  Then another night it could be a Panda Dress.  Once it’s in my head I can’t stop until these dream outfits become real.  I don’t really believe in style.  Everyone should be free to dress as they please…I believe in originality!

Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?

Think of the time you worked the very hardest at something you wanted…now times that by a million and that’s how hard you will have to work. If you can dedicate 7 days a week, 24 hours a day to something you really love…then you’ll make it…just don’t give up!!

What are you most looking forward to at the BUST Magazine Craftacular and Food Fair this year?

I seriously cannot wait to go shopping for all my friends and family!!!  You find the COOLEST, most original things that you literally cannot find in stores…which I think make them that much more special to give!!!  You can get the art straight from the artist…you can’t say that about a big store!
