Meet Larry Krone, New Artist-In-Residence at Joe’s Pub in NYC

by Samantha Albala

Joe’s Pub at The Public is trying this cool new thing, an artists-in-residence initiative, and I am sure glad that they are. Now through Sept. 25 you can see the unique and thrilling experience of Larry Krone’s visual masterpieces from his upcoming Look Book through the 2014-2015 season.

Pieces from his book, photographed mainly by Todd Oldham, will be on display in the Philip Janice Levin Foundation Mezzanine. These photos showcase creations of Larry Krone’s BRAND (stage costumes) since 1997 and the House of Larréon (fashion line), which launched in 2010.

While he was doing costume design and fabrication for his own performances, he noticed that his friend and cabaret superstar (who is performing this month at Joe’s Pub!) Bridget Everett needed gowns worthy of her wild musical act.

The director at Joe’s Pub, Shanta Thake says:

“Larry’s work, on stage, as a visual artist and as a costume designer at Joe’s Pub has elevated and enhanced the work of so many performers. I have watched his constantly surprising and evolving collaborations flourish over the years on and off the stage. We feel passionate about supporting his work in this way so it can continue to grow and enrich our arts community.”

Todd Oldham, a photographer of the photos on display and in Look Book, is known for vibrancy and “uncomfortable beauty” (which I take to mean, super-beauty). Although the majority of the photos captured are Oldham’s, the book also features photos from Kevin Yatarola, snapshots by Krone himself, fashion sketches, photo outtakes, and tributes written by celebrity Larréon fans. The funds to create Look Book were raised through private donations, a benefit concert, and multiple fashion shows.

A portion of Look Book sales will benefit the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls too! (I’m always down for art going towards a good cause!)

You can also get some pretty cool post card sets on Krone’s website if you either, a) can’t make it to New York or b) really really can’t stop staring at his artwork!

Tickets can be purchased online @ joespub.comby phone from 10am-7pm (212) 967-7555, or in person started at 2pm @ 725 Lafayette Street, New York, NY.
