Meet Dattch, The Grindr for Girls

by Gwen Berumen

Someone has finally developed an app (similar to Grindr and Tinder) that focuses solely on girls loving girls. (Finally!) Dattch is a new app in the market that is directed towards lesbian and bisexual women.

Built by women for women, it’s designed to surpass any of the experiences that women have on other dating apps. Dattch founder and CEO, Robyn Exton says that “You can’t just take Grindr and make it pink and give it to women and say ‘Ta da!’ It’s a completely different experience and product—and I think no one seems to have taken the time to do it yet.” Very true. It’s important to have something that is directed towards women, particularly since being a lesbian or bisexual woman on other dating apps (even those that have the ‘option’ for that) is not very safe.

The app is not only unique in its audience, but also in the way that it operates. The interface is very different, with Pinterest-like profiles, and images pulled from Instagram and Facebook feeds. Picture messaging and the ability to see who has viewed your profile is also included, in order to make meeting a potential match even easier. Not only that, but you don’t “like” someone the way you do on other apps. Dattch allows users to find a match while play the game “Would You Rather.” When two people are matched to each other, the gives them a little introductory blurb.

What started in the UK is now taking the US by storm (and will soon venture to Australia). The app has been starting on a city-by-city basis here in the states, and it is already operating in L.A. and San Francisco. It just dropped here in NYC this past Friday!

Dattch definitely has plans for expansion, since Exton says that the app’s membership grows 30 percent each month. It promises to open up in any new city when they receive 2,000 requests for the app in that area.

There are over 4 million women in U.S. that identify as lesbian or bisexual, so it’s great that this app is finally a thing.
