Guitar legend Mary Timony, who has been in some iconic bands––Helium, Wild Flag, and Ex Hex to name a few––releases her first solo recording in 15 years with Untame the Tiger. This album is a powerful meditation on loss and loneliness, best exemplified by the country-tinged track “The Guest.” A polymath of musical styles, Timony incorporates seemingly disparate sounds including metal, medieval, ’90s alternative, and prog rock in a way that somehow makes total sense. As musically impressive as it is emotionally powerful, Untame the Tiger is at once painfully vulnerable and relentlessly hopeful.
