The weather is heating up again, and so are things for the young pop star. Lorde is the first female artist ever to dominate Billboard adult album alternative airplay with two songs. “Team” follows the New Zealander’s quadruple-platinum hit from last summer, “Royals.” “Team” made it to #6 on Billboard‘s Hot 100, and her debut album Pure Heroine has sold over a million copies in the U.S.
Lorde will play Coachella along with other female pop acts like Lana Del Ray, Haim, Ellie Goulding, Kate Nash, Neko Case, Solange, The Knife, Dum Dum Girls, Waxahatchee, Warpaint, Daughter, Chvrches, and Austra.
That may sound like you gotta get to Coachella if you love lady acts; which don’t get me wrong, you do. But keep in mind that although that sounds like a refreshing plethora of bands and artists featuring females, I’ve named just 13 bands out of over 120. So even if my counts are way off, we’re still hitting under 30%, meaning the festival, like most, is still male-dominated.
This is why Lorde’s ability to put out smash after smash is so important. While Coachella and the music industry at large may not be on our team supporting women 100% of the time, Lorde competes on both sides, and has become the star player overnight. “So there,” she repeats in “Team,” “So there.”
