Lorde premieres video for “Team”

by Nina Karina

Like everyone else and their mother, I can’t seem to get enough of the reigning teen queen Lorde, who shot to stardom after her song “Royals” went viral this past year.  Her new single “Team” and consequent video do not disappoint, as both serve as a personal and heart wrenching  look at teenagedom with a catchy beat that will lead to one person dance parties in bedrooms across the world.

The video follows Lorde as a kind of cult leader for a band of teenagers as well as a boy who is to join said cult. On the way to his initiation process ,we catch glimpses of other young people hanging out in demolished buildings instead of the glitzy clubs or wild parties that they are so often depicted in the media, a fact Lorde points out in her lyric “I’m kind of over getting told to throw my hands up in the air.” Blatantly mocking the many frivolous dance anthems that clog the airwaves while the rest of the media fetishizes youth, Lorde brings us back to the gritty reality of growing up feeling isolated in a modern world.  “Team” stands out as a single about desperately trying to fit in.
