Long Hair Don’t Care and Beyonce: A New Typeface

by Claire Filipek

This glorious project was created by Shurong Diao, a graphic designer and soon to be graduate of School of Visual Arts. She created her Hair Alphabet in a senior portfolio class taught by Ji Lee.

Diao cited Chinese calligraphy as an inspiration for her Hair Alphabet saying, “I want to build a connection between Chinese characters and the Roman alphabet by using different forms of long black hair, just like putting ink on rice paper to draw Chinese Characters”. Diao made the typeface with the help of Xingpei Wang, who posed in the nude and wore extensions to assemble the typographical compositions.

She is working on several personal projects such as tiny subway novels and street art. Be sure to check out more of her work on her website.

The only thing that comes close to rivaling the excellency of Daio’s font would have to be The ABC’s of Beyonce. Because well Beyonce. (And SNL’s “Beygonce” is always watching)
