Lizzo and Caroline Smith Collab to Raise Money for The Women’s Foundation of Minnesota

by Jackie Leahy

Get psyched! Musician and rapper Lizzo’s new collaboration with Caroline Smith, “Let ‘Em Say,” will be performed on Saturday, Sept. 27, live at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The proceeds from the concert, which is presented by 89.3 The Current and Radio K  will go to the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota. And you can listen to the dope new track here

Lizzo’s familiarity with gospel, R&B, rock and classical music can be heard in her 2013 album LIZZOBANGERS, produced by Lazerbeak (Doomtree) and Ryan Olson (Gayngs).

Praised as “audacious, raucously inventive and fun,” by The Boston Globe, Lizzo has also gained a reputation for music with a message. The Chicago Sun Times praised Lizzo’s single “Batches & Cookies (feat Sophia Eris)” and the message of her song “W.E.R.K,” in which she advises her fans to “Act like a lady/Think like a man/Werk like a boss.”

Lizzo has been writing music since she saw Destiny’s Child perform in a Houston Wal-Mart as a child. After graduating with a classical flute degree from the University of Houston, Lizzo turned down a scholarship for graduate studies at the Paris Conservatory so she could pursue her career as a solo artist.

Lizzo’s close friend and fellow artist Caroline Smith shares her convictions. Of their collaboration, Smith says,

“Lizzo and I will join forces to share each other’s songs in celebration and recognition of all the girls and women out there that were told they were ‘too this’ and ‘not enough that.’ This is for all of the mamas out there busting their asses and for all of the girls and women out there that make us proud to hold a microphone.”

While Lizzo combines elements of classical, gospel, R&B, rock, Caroline Smith cites ’90s R&B as an influence and describes her music as ‘neo-soul with…indie-rock roots.’ You can check out a track from Caroline Smith’s most recent album, Half About Being a Woman, below.

Lizzo’s album tour will visit various U.K. and U.S. cities. You can check out her tour destinations on her website
