The iconic Marianne Faithfull recently passed away and left behind her last recordings, which are now available as a four-track EP. “Burning Moonlight,” “Three Kinsman Bold,” and “She Moved Thru’ the Fair,” all originally recorded in the 1960s, receive a folk rock treatment similar to the original versions, except for one big difference: Faithfull’s voice, once a light and airy soprano, with time sounds lived-in with a worldly, wrecked glamour. This makes the lyrics sound more poignant as sung by an experienced woman who really lived her life to the fullest. “Love Is,” a new song with a modern rock vibe, contains an audio sample from an interview Faithfull did in 1968. I strongly urge everyone to delve into Marianne Faithfull’s music catalog chronologically, read her 1994 autobiography Faithfull, and discover one of the prototypes for women who lived life on her own terms and persevered to greatness.
