Three Women-Owned Lipstick Brands That Give Back

by BUST Magazine

From our April/May 2018 issue, we’re celebrating women-owned lipstick brands that give back.

Beautiful Rights

Take Action Collection2 720x 73ac1

With names like Pantsuit Pink and Gloss Ceiling, it’s no surprise that Beautiful Rights embraces the political. The brand, founded by beauty industry vet Kristen Leonard, launched in late 2016, following Trump’s election. Twenty percent of sales—not profits—of the four lipsticks ($24, beautifulrights.com), lipgloss ($24), and brow pencil ($18) go to charities that support women’s rights and gender justice, including Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and Emily’s List.

Lipslut

This L.A.-based brand, founded by college student Katie Sones, went viral in 2017 after it launched with a single nude-pink lipstick called F*ck Trump ($19.95, lipslut.com). Packaging for the matte liquid lippie is emblazoned with an Andy Warhol-style, pop-art depiction of a lipsticked #45. Lipslut sends 50 percent of F*ck Trump proceeds to a civil rights organization—customers get to choose which one. A matte red liquid lipstick, F*ck Hollywood, was added in early 2018, with 50 percent of proceeds going to anti-sexual assault organizations.

Unapology

Google employees Summer Prevé and Ariane Dupont are the brains behind this beauty brand, which launched last year. Their six lipsticks ($23, unapology.co) feature names like The Innovator, The Mastermind, and The Visionary, and are designed and tested to be flattering on women of all skin tones. Unapology’s mission is, “empowering women from all backgrounds to live confidently, fiercely, and beautifully.” And they back that up by using 10 percent of their revenue to give small business grants to women through the nonprofit Move Up.
