Lily Allen Returns With “Hard Out Here”—And It’s The Best

by Eloise Giegerich

After a several-year hiatus, British pop goddess and former BUST covergirl Lily Allen is back with an incredibly awesome video for her new single, “Hard Out Here.”

Directed by Christopher Sweeney, the video tackles sexism in the music industry through Allen’s signature blunt sarcasm, addressing tired gender roles and expectations with lines like, “If you’re not a size 6 and you’re not good looking / Then well you better be rich, or be real good at cooking,” and the fantastic chorus, “Forget your balls and grow a pair of tits / It’s hard out here for a bitch.”

Aside from its kick-ass lyrics, “Hard Out Here” also delivers a scathing look not simply at sexism, but the general ridiculousness of the music industry of late. Through its hilarious frames, which open on Allen getting liposuction (she gained weight after her two pregnancies which is simply unacceptable), the video proceeds to slyly comment on Miley Cyrus through its presentation of comically ironic twerking, as well as Robin Thicke (aka the worst human ever) with a display of giant silver balloons that spell out possibly the most hilarious and brilliant line ever: “LILY ALLEN HAS A BAGGY PUSSY.”

I know y’all thought the pop industry couldn’t be saved, but it looks like Allen’s “Hard Out Here” may just make up for the emotional damage inflicted on all of us by endless “Wrecking Ball” GIFS. And, while it’s unclear whether or not Allen’s new single is for an upcoming album or simply a solo track, we’re just feelin’ blessed to have a crazy-amazing new song to jam out to!
