Let’s Start a Pussy Riot! Make Your Voice Heard With This New Project

by Kaitlin Cole

Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot has been in the news nearly daily lately, and with good reason. The announcement of the members’ two-year prison sentences has mobilized and outraged so many of us, and sparked an outpouring of support from around the globe. Three masked activists in Germany were recently arrested for staging a “Free Pussy Riot” protest inside a cathedral, and Madonna and Kathleen Hanna even lent them support. Now a new project, Lets Start a Pussy Riot!, has been created to raise awareness and keep people talking about the band and its incarceration.

Lets Start a Pussy Riot! is described as a celebration of the band’s principles and a call to action intended to “create a response that can say something larger than ourselves.” The site asks readers to use their creativity to keep the protest alive, in the form of “writing, painting, and singing our opinions.” The site’s seeking submissions in the form of essays, stories, artwork (see one rad example above), journalism, and letters of support. The content be added to the blog regularly. If you’d like to get involved, submissions can be sent to [email protected]. You can also follow them on twitter here.
