Oh Lauryn, say it isn’t so! The singer has been charged with tax evasion and is facing three months in jail. Always the controversial figure, she compared the whole ordeal to the experiences of her ancestors stating, “I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them,” Hill said before U.S. Magistrate Madeline Cox Arleo. “I had an economic system imposed on me.”
Last year she plead guilty to failing to pay taxes between 2005 and 2007, the whole shebang amounting to over 1.8 million dollars. The Grammy winner will face three months of house arrest after completing her sentence, followed by nine months of supervised release.
The fact that Hill, now 37, has six young kids and no prior criminal record swayed the sentencing. She used the case as an opportunity to get the word out about her new music. “It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released,” Hill wrote. “And yes, I am working on new music.” We have been waiting since 1998’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”
