Katy Perry’s Costume Designer Talks Entrepreneurship, Brooklyn, and Why She’ll Be at BUST Craftacular’s Primped #getprimped

by Gina Furfaro

Julie Mollo is a Brooklyn-based fashion designer with the cutest retro clothes in town. She started sewing custom clothes and costumes for Katy Perry while still a college student, and has since expanded her business into street-ready skirt sets that even non-rockstars can totally rock.

Read on for the story behind Julie’s kooky-yet-cute creations.

Tell us about yourself!

I’m a Brooklyn-based fashion designer & stylist of all things fun, flirty, retro, rock&roll (and now REVERSIBLE)!

How did you get started?

I’ve always been super crafty (it’s in my genes) but I moved to NYC to attend Pratt Institute in 2006, and started dressing Katy Perry in 2008 when I was just 20 and still in college. My business began there, creating custom garments for pop stars, rock stars, party girls and prom queens around the world! Now I live and work in my studio/showroom/apartment in Clinton Hill and hustle my way through every day!

What’s inspiring you right now?

Prints! Vintage advertisements, metallics, everything Mad Men and everything that can be worn more than one way, hence my new collection, Retroversible.

Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?

BE PASSIONATE. If you don’t want to live and breathe your career, then don’t pursue working on a business by yourself. Dedication is key. If you don’t have passion and belief for what you’re doing, you’ll never make it through the rough times.

What are you most looking forward to at BUST Craftacular’s Primped?

Oh my gosh! Hmmm, it’s a toss up between tarot card readings and the braid bar! Oh and (duh!) my own, super fun booth! I’m excited! see you there!
