Kathleen Hanna, riot grrrl and lead singer of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and the Julie Ruin (whose debut EP Run Fast is out now!), recently spoke to the New York Times about her upcoming documentary The Punk Singer directed by Sini Anderson, and revealed an exclusive clip from the upcoming film.
Hanna, who is battling late-stage Lyme disease, chatted with the Times about making a movie about her life: “Mortality looming over you really changes your personality in such a huge way. I thought I was dying, so I was like, ‘I don’t care anymore — I am vulnerable. I’m sick of being guarded!’”
The video clip gives viewers a preview of some of the film’s interviewees, like Corin Tucker—Kim Gordon, Carrie Brownstein, Tavi Gevinson also offer commentary throughout the film—as well as touches on the feminist fanzines Hanna and her Bikini Kill bandmates created in the 90’s.
The Punk Singer opens November 29 in New York and Los Angeles (Hanna may even appear at some of the NYC showings at IFC Center, so check out their website for more details), and the film is slated to open to a wider release in December.
